"What's the difference between "NUTRITIONAL" supplements and "NUTRACEUTICALS"?

Asked to George F. Kite, Ph.D., Vice President, Vesta Research & Development and nutritional product consultant to Health+Plus Corporation...

Dr. Kite's response:

"We all consume nutrients every day. Our food, including proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, etc. should contain all the nutrients we need to maintain long-term health. Frequently our diets prove to be inadequate, or our nutrients needs change as we grow older or we change our life-styles. Sometimes we need to add to, or supplement our normal intake of nutrients. Thus we turn to nutritional supplements, such as vitamins and minerals, to give our bodies a full measure of the tools and building-blocks they need to keep us healthy and well-balanced.

Sometimes a temporary imbalance occurs in our systems that can best be corrected with a more focused selection of nutrients. These special nutrients are called Nutraceuticals, and are generally taken for a limited time and for a specific purpose. They can range from a specific hormone such as Melatonin to whole herbs or herb extracts, such as St. John’s Wort, that contain a variety of synergistic components.

In other words, a wide array of nutrients maintains our long-term health while carefully selected, specific Nutraceuticals help our bodies correct a temporary problem. Nutritional supplements and Nutraceuticals work hand-in-hand to keep us healthy through the natural support and regulation, both long and short term, of our bodies."
